Meet Coach Santi, your personal trainer in Costa Mesa

Santiago Cardenas, Coach Santi, has spent six years learning one thing above all else: no two bodies are the same, so no two programs should be either. He trains everyday people in Costa Mesa inside the private pods at Focus Athletics, with coaching that's tailored, genuinely fun, and always safe.

The story

From big-club floors to private pods

Santi is 30, and he's spent the last six years doing nothing but coaching people to move, feel, and live better. He didn't come up as a pro athlete or a fitness influencer. He came up on the gym floor, thousands of hours next to real people, learning what actually helps a body change and, just as importantly, what quietly makes people quit.

His career has followed a deliberate arc, each stop teaching him a different layer of the craft. He started in big-club group coaching at Club Studio, the luxury boutique fitness concept where dozens of members moved through a room at once. There he learned to read a crowd fast: to spot the person whose knee was about to complain, to cue a lift so twenty people got it at the same time, to make hard work feel like the best part of someone's day. Energy and enthusiasm became second nature.

But a room full of people is not the same as one person in front of you. So he moved to semi-private team training at B-Body Fitness, a studio built around small, customized team sessions. Coaching four or five people at once, each on their own program, in the same room, forced him to get precise. He learned to write a plan for a specific body instead of a generic class, to adjust on the fly, and to keep a small group motivated without ever letting anyone hide in the back.

Today, that journey has landed exactly where it should: fully personalized one-on-one and small-group coaching in the private pods at Focus Athletics, Costa Mesa's boutique training studio off Airport Loop Drive. It's the most intentional environment he's ever worked in, warm, quiet, gallery-calm, with arched doorways, natural light, private training pods, plus a cold plunge and infrared sauna for recovery. It's the kind of place where you can focus entirely on your own body without an audience, which is exactly how Santi believes real coaching should feel.

Santi practices what he preaches

Coaching isn't something Santi does from the sidelines. He competes himself, including on the HYROX fitness-race circuit and at Spartan races with his crew, so he knows firsthand what it takes to build strength safely, stay consistent, and show up on the days motivation runs low. That lived experience is exactly what he brings to your sessions.

What he believes

Every body is different, so no two programs should match

This is the belief everything else is built on. Your body composition, your chemistry, the demands of your life and your history, all of it is uniquely yours. A plan copied from someone else, or pulled off a template, is a plan built for a body that isn't yours.

So Santi starts with you: what you've done, what hurts, what you love, what your week actually looks like in Costa Mesa. Then he builds a program around that reality and keeps adjusting it as your body responds. Two clients standing side by side will almost never run the same session.

  • Fun & attainable beats grind culture. The best program is the one you'll keep showing up for, challenging, never miserable.
  • Safe comes first. Technique before load, progress at a pace your body can handle. No wrecking yourself to prove a point.
  • Built for everyday people. Busy professionals, parents, adults over 50, total beginners, this is for the general population, not just athletes.
Why fun, attainable & safe

The grind isn't the point. Your life is.

Somewhere along the way, fitness got sold as punishment, the harder it hurts, the more it must be working. Santi doesn't buy it. He's watched too many people white-knuckle their way through a brutal program, burn out in six weeks, and blame themselves. The workout wasn't too easy for them. It was too miserable to keep.

His approach is the opposite of grind culture, and it's better precisely because it lasts. When a session is genuinely enjoyable and clearly doable, you come back. When you come back consistently, month after month, your body actually changes, not because any single workout was heroic, but because you kept going. Fun and attainable aren't the soft option; they're the strategy. And safe is non-negotiable, because the fastest way to lose all your progress is an injury that puts you on the couch.

A session with Santi

What an hour in your pod actually feels like

No two sessions look the same, but here's the shape of a typical one at Focus Athletics, calm, personal, and a lot more human than the gym in your head.

  1. :00

You arrive to a quiet, private pod. No wall of mirrors and strangers, just your space, your equipment, and a coach who already knows the plan for the day. Santi checks in first: how you slept, what's sore, how life's been. That's not small talk; it shapes the session.

  2. :08

A warm-up built for your body. Not a generic five minutes on a bike, targeted prep for the exact joints and movements you're about to load, so the work feels good instead of grinding.

  3. :18

The main work, coached rep by rep. Strength that fits your level, cued in plain language, adjusted the moment something doesn't feel right. You'll be challenged, and you'll understand exactly why you're doing every movement.

  4. :48

A finish that leaves you better, not broken. You leave energized, standing taller, already a little more confident, then optional recovery in the cold plunge or infrared sauna if you've got the time.
